Bench Staff Certification

Bench Staff Certifications

All volunteers listed on a team roster are responsible for ensuring that they meet the certification requirements for their role.  These roles include:

  • Coach

  • Asssistant Coach

  • Trainer

  • Manager

  • On-Ice Helper

Certification requirements are defined by Hockey Eastern Ontario. The requirements relate to the age of the youth on a team.  In addition to HEO requirements, SMHA requires that everyone coming into contact with players have a valid Police Record Check (PRC), which is valid for 3 consecutive seasons.

The following sections give a summary of some of the certification requirements specifications for each role.

Please check the HEO site and use their tool to ensure you have all the proper certifications for the role in which you would like to volunteer for.

Important Note Regarding Assistant Coach Certification

There are technically two levels of Assistant Coach.  SMHA prefers that Assistant Coaches have the Certified Classification because it allows you to be fully involved with the team and to fully support the Head Coach.

The trained classifications require a person to have taken the Respect in Sport Activity Leaders course, the Gender Identity course, and have a valid  Vulnerable Sector PRC.  This classification can be confusing to people because it doesn’t allow them to be a true Assistant Coach.  With this classification you can never be a replacement to the Head Coach if they are absent from the bench for any reason, and you cannot be on the bench in any capacity during tournaments.  It is also the Coach’s decision as to whether or not they want to have someone on their bench staff that doesn’t have the Certified classification.  The Head Coach needs to provide a letter confirming that this person will abide by the restrictions.

The certified classification is the preferred classification of SMHA.  This classification is for people who have successfully completed the Coach 2 course.  The HU-Online Coach 1/2 courses are the prerequisite for the Coach 2 course.  This course has in class and on ice portions that are done in the same day. The requirements of the trained classification above are also required.  This classification removes the restrictions listed above.

Important Note Regarding Respect in Sport Training

There are two versions of the online Respect in Sport course: one for parents and one for volunteers.  Ensure that you complete the version for volunteers. This version must be completed in order to qualify for a team staff role.  PLEASE NOTE THAT FEES FOR RIS ARE NOT BE ELIGIBLE FOR REIMBURSMENT FROM SMHA.

Important Note Regarding Gender Identity Training

Please note that those listed as bench staff must have gender identity training within 30 days of being appointed to a team.  In the event they do not have GIT in place, they will be removed from the roster.

Trainer

  • HTCP Course can be found here.
  • Please note that Competitive RAMS team trainers require a higher level of certification then mandated by HEO.  RAMS trainers require HTCP Level 2 Certification.  THIS IS FOR RAMS COMPETITIVE TEAMS ONLY.  House trainers are only required to have HTCP level 1.
    • Trainer Level 2

The HTCP second level of certification recognizes a minimum credential of Standard or Advanced First Aid cards with CPR Level C. *AED training is strongly recommended. Also, individuals that have certain types of medical or para-medical training can be issued Level 2 status. In all circumstances, to obtain Level 2 status the participant must possess HTCP Level 1 certification which is valid at the time at which the Level 2 status is granted.

Certification at Level 2 is achieved by one of the following methods:

Recognition of a Standard First aid or Advanced First Aid card from an Ontario WSIB recognized FADO (First Aid Delivery Organization) or when a member association hosts a Standard or Advanced First Aid course. The FADO’s recognized by the HTCP and its members for the purpose of providing First Aid, CPR and AED training are listed with the Ontario WSIB.

    • Upon successfully completing the approved HDCO program (HTCP Level I) any individual who has the following professional qualifications, certified to work in Canada and is practicing, can be granted Level 2 status: - Registered Nurse - Occupational Health Nurses - Chiropractors - Physicians - Basic Trauma Life Support (B.T.L.S.) - EMCA certified - CATA/NATA - Military Medics (valid for 2 years from end of service data) (Qualifications must be licensed in Canada) - Physiotherapist - Dentist - Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) - Podiatrist
