Recruitment for Officials and Timekeepers for 2023/24 season

2023-08-09

The 2023/2024 hockey season is approaching quickly.   Every year we look to add new officials to our Association.

Referees

We are recruiting referees for the upcoming hockey season.

Whatever your goals, refereeing can offer:
  • part-time job that allows you to make money and to meet new friends
  • a great way to stay involved in the game during/after a playing/coaching career. Officiating gives you a whole new perspective on hockey.
  • excellent way to get stay active in the winter months

The age that we start to accept referees is 14 years old (by Dec 31, 2023) . The job as an official can be very demanding and a high level of maturity is needed. Newer and entry level officials will start off doing house league U9 and U11 games. The majority of these games are on the weekends.

Officiating also requires a high level of commitment. There are a number of people counting on you to show up, know your rules and act professionally. These include your fellow referees, coaching staff, parents, and most importantly the players.

If you are interested in becoming an official this season:
  1. Decide if officiating really is for you.  Officiating is fun, but it isn’t for everyone.  Are you ready for the challenge?  Do you know what costs are involved?  Are you ready to make the time commitment? We can answer your questions and help you to become a ref.
  2. Please email timekeepersupervisor@stittsvilleminorhockey.com or vpoperations@stittsvilleminorhockey.com with your name, phone #, and a quick bit of information describing your hockey/ref history, if any. We will then be conducting on-ice evaluations and off-ice interviews as part of the selection process on Tues Aug 22; training to follow Tues Aug 29 and Tues  September12, CRC-A, 8-10pm.  Selected candidates must be available for interview and on-ice testing on the evening on Tues August 22, 7-9, Kanata Rec Center.
  3. If you are successful in being selected as a referee for the upcoming season, you will be given instruction on how to register for a certification clinic.  There are fees associated with this step.
  4. Once you successfully complete the clinic, you will be required to contact the Referee-In-Chief again so that we know you have obtained your certification.

If you have any additional questions please email timekeepersupervisor@stittsvilleminorhockey.com or vpoperations@stittsvilleminorhockey.com

Timekeepers

Once again this season, SMHA will be looking for timekeepers to run the game clock and complete game sheets at all SMHA home games at the rinks for both house and competitive games.  Timekeepers must be at least 14 years old by Dec 31 of 2023, and must be familiar with referee signals, rules of the game and be counted on to act responsibly at all times during their shifts.

Testing and interviews will be conducted in late Aug or in early September to select timekeepers.  Online attendance at a timekeeper clinic will also be required, date yet to be offered for the online courses.

Please contact Rob Stewart, Timekeeper Supervisor at timekeepersupervisor@stittsvilleminorhockey.com or Allyssia Chamberlain, VP Operations, at vpoperations@stittsvilleminorhockey.com for interest in the paid position or any further information.

Deadline for applications for both referee and timekeeper positions is Monday Aug 21. On-ice tryouts for refs are on Tues Aug 22. Please ensure when you are emailing your details, that you are providing your own email address.  All contact with applicants for either one of these positions must be done with the applicant and not the parent(s).  Please ensure you indicate on the form which position you are applying for.  You may apply for both if you wish, but you will only be allowed to work in one position.
