Major Atom Rams Take Gold at Capital Winter Classic

2018-01-24

With a 4-0 win the Stittsville Rams Major Atom boys team took home the championship at the Capital Winter Classic Hockey Tournament.

The Rams shutout the Casselman-Embrun Ice Dogs in the final to finish the tournament with a perfect 5-0 record.

The Rams took control early in the game as Kallum Malloy and Ryan Wallace scored two first period goals. Ryan Power, who scored twice on the same shift in the second period, rounded out the scoring.

A solid performance in goal by Taiki Mossman, who stopped all ten shots he faced, was instrumental to the Rams success.

The championship shutout was the fourth by the Rams goaltending tandem of Mossman and Riley Martin.

Stittsville opened the tournament with a 4-3 victory over the Hamilton Huskies. The Huskies were the only team to find a way to beat the Rams stingy defensive play.

The Rams then went on to shutout the Char-Lan Rebels 3-0 followed by a 5-0 win over the Erindale Spitfires to earn a bye to the semifinals where they faced the Burlington Bulldogs.

Once again the Rams were ready from the start and jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead, made it 3-0 in the second and added two more in the third for a decisive victory. The Rams outshot its opponent 34-15.

The Rams were the only team to go undefeated in its division. It was Stittsville’s second tournament win of the season as they took home gold in Belleville in October.

Stittsville wraps up tournament play the weekend of Feb. 2 as they head to Toronto for the North York Knights Tournament. The Rams will then look for a strong performance in league play as the playoffs get underway in early February.
