Stittsville Novice “A” Snipers Win the Perth Novice A Tournament!!!

2012-11-26

The Stittsville Novice “A” Snipers participated in the Perth Novice “A” tournament this past weekend (Nov. 24), taking home the championship after 3 hard fought games on Saturday.

In the first game, the Snipers got off to a great start with goals from Cormac Hanlon and Dylan Bedard. Despite being outshot, the Ottawa East team did not quit, and managed to close the gap with a goal in the second period make it 2-1 for the Snipers. The Snipers were determined to win the third period and they did just that. First, Lucas Ross scored a rocket of a goal and then Alex Lowell scored a beautiful short-handed goal. Lucas finished off the scoring with another top shelf goal sealing the deal for a final score of 5-2 for the Snipers. Other notable efforts were put forth by Jesse Hughes, who helped get the puck out of our zone when Ottawa East was pressing hard. Also, Jacob Penfold had a great opportunity to score, making a beautiful move to beat the Ottawa East goalie on a breakaway, only to hear that horrible sound of the puck hitting the post...sorry Jacob!

In the second game of the day, the Snipers faced the Osgood Rideau Sens. The Snipers dominated the game, scoring 5 goals. Jacob Whang scored 2 big goals, Alex Lowell got himself another goal, and Lucas Ross racked up another 2 goals in this impressive win over the Sens. Honourable mention goes to the Snipers defensemen (Eddie Collins, Jacob Billo, Austin Hayes, and Grady Lowthian) for making it nearly impossible for the Sens to get a shot on net. The few shots that did make it through were easily handled by our goalie, Jacob Haight, who earned a shutout for the game.

In the final game of the tournament, the Snipers faced the home-town Perth Lanark Wings. The Snipers had previously played Perth during the regular season and the Snipers were ready for a tough game. Due to some great effort by key diggers like Jonah Young and Alex Gschwind, the Snipers were able to keep a lot of pressure on Perth and capitalize on some key scoring opportunities.  The first period started off well, with Cormac Hanlon scoring the first goal to put the Snipers on the scoreboard. However, Perth persisted and fought hard, despite being outshot and spending a lot of time in their end, and the game remained 1-0 until early in the 3rd when Lucas Ross scored a critical goal to give the Snipers a little more breathing room. Perth scored one goal late in the game and then Dylan Bedard got it back by scoring one of his own in the last minute of play, making a heads up play to score on an empty net while being chased by 2 of the Perth players. Another great game by Jacob Haight to help give the Snipers the edge and win the tournament!

Overall, it was a great experience for the Snipers. They played great and were rewarded for all their hard work so far this year. Great job, Snipers!
