Stittsville Storm - 2013 Russell Atom A Tournament Champions!

The morning of Sunday, Jan 20th was the third tournament in a row that the Stittsville Storm would find themselves playing in a tournament semi-finals.  Previously, they had went undefeated going into the
semi-finals of the Orleans tournaments, falling short in a nail-biting 3-2 loss to the South End Shockwave.  Next, they were undefeated going into the semi-finals of the prestigous Bell Capital Cup, finishing on the wrong side of a hard-fought 2-1 game against the Iceberg D'Alymer, the team that went on to win it all.  An impressive Bronze medal performance in the Bell Capital Cup but the Storm were left wondering what it would feel like to make it to the finals.

That time would come, as the Storm would pull off a 3-2 win against Orleans in the semi-finals of the 2013 Russell Tournament held from Jan 18-20 in Russell, setting up the championship game Sunday evening. A game that would feature the two remaining undefeated teams - Stittsville Storm vs Russell Warriors. It was a heart pounding affair. With the Russell Warriors up 1-0 early in the third, the only time the Storm trailed in the tournament.  However, the Storm faced the adversity head-on and really stepped up their game with tremendous pressure and great scoring chances, ringing one off the post before netting 2 quick back-to-back goals to go up 2-1.  The Storm took a penalty within the final minute of the game and Russell pulled their goalie to make it 6 skaters against 4.  The Storm continue to stand strong and continually read the attack to intercept passes and clear the zone to prevent any final shots on net.  As the buzzer sounded, the kids were ecstatic as they tackled each other in celebration.

We are very proud of the team's performance and how well they represented our community both on and off the ice.  It's great to have a championship banner to bring home to Stittsville!
