STITTSVILLE RESIDENT FINALIST IN $1 MILLION KRAFT CONTEST
Votes Could Net Local Hockey Association $100,000

Stittsville resident, Cathy Bureau has been named a finalist in the $1 million Kraft “Hockey Goes On” Contest. The finalists were announced today on the Kraft website. The company has chosen 100 finalists in five regions of the country and will award one winner from each region $100,000 to be given to their chosen Minor Hockey Association. In addition, four runners up in each region will be given $20,000 for their association. Kraft received over 1000 nominations for the contest from across the country. Kraft will open online voting on their website (www.krafthockeygoeson.ca) to the public on March 23rd at 9:00 am ET. Voting closes on March 24th at 11:59.59 pm ET.

Cathy Bureau, an inductee in the Nepean Sports Wall of Fame in 2009, is a women’s hockey pioneer in the Ottawa area. She has served as a past president of the Ottawa District Women’s Hockey Association, helping to organize the 1990 Women's World Championship in Ottawa, as well as being the first Canadian female hockey player to play in the US on a scholarship and becoming the first female level 4 referee in Ottawa.

Bureau has chosen the Goulbourn Girls Hockey Association as her designated recipient if she receives one of the monetary prizes. She started the fledgling organization in 2011 with no ice time and no money but armed with 24 girls from the Goulbourn area who wanted to play. She found a kindred spirit in the late Joan Thorneycroft, who provided the much needed financial backing for the association. This year, the association gained acceptance into the ODWHA, fielding one atom and one novice team, as well as an initiation program for young skaters.
