2013-05-26

The SMHA has been made aware of an excellent hockey opportunity for children living with type 1 diabetes. The program is a mix of hockey skills and diabetes education and will take place in Milton Ontario this summer.

The diabetes nutrition and education component of the program is powered by a leader in the field of diabetes, Medtronic of Canada ltd.  They will be providing clinical diabetes experts and specialists to participate throughout the program, including Dr. Michael Riddell and many others.

The hockey aspect of the program will be taught by elite level coaches from the NCAA and CIS. The head coach is the current head coach of Buffalo State University and the assistant is the current head coach of the Concordia University Men's Hockey Team. They will be joined by 5 additional NCAA and CIS level associate coaches and will be aided by a video technician as each participant will have their skill monitored throughout the program and will be provided with individualized dvd's capping their performance and improvements.

Finally, Cory Conacher of the Ottawa Senators, who lives with type 1 diabetes, will be the NHL representative for the program. He is a terrific person and tremendous hockey player and is the perfect role model for all the young participants. He will be joined by former Canadian Olympian, Chris Jarvis. Chris also lives with type 1 diabetes and runs a fabulous organization of his own.
