Major Atom Rams Champions of Empire State Cup!

2013-11-01

Major Atom Rams Rock into Rochester and Roll Out Empire State Cup 2013 Champions

The Stittsville Major Atom Rams team travelled south this past weekend to Rochester, New York to claim their second tournament championship of this season.

On Friday, the Rams played two games first facing the Ajax Knights and then the Toronto Eagles. The Rams found themselves down 2-1 early against the team from Ajax but found their legs and controlled most of the second and third periods, registering 3 unanswered goals in the third period to claim the game 4-2. Next up the Eagles found themselves caught in a fire storm in the first period as the Rams momentum from the first game carried into the second. The Rams were up 4-0 after one period of play and carried there hardnosed play through the second and third periods winning 7-1.

Saturday would only see the Rams playing one game versus the Pickering Panthers. Again, the fast forechecking of the Rams had the cats back on their heels. With steady defence and solid goaltending the Rams were able to tame the Panthers and control much possession time. It showed on the scoreboard as the game ended with the Rams emerging 7-1 victors for the second straight game.

Sunday morning would have the Rams up at 5:00AM for their final qualifier versus the Skylands Kings out of New Jersey. With the first period ending with no scoring it was time for a wakeup call. The scoring started just seconds into the second frame as the Rams found the rhythm they had be displaying in the previous three contests. There would be a lucky 7 on the scoreboard again after 39 minutes of play as the Rams blanked the Kings 7-0.

The championship game was a showcase of two great forechecking teams, both 4-0 leading into the final with amazingly low goals against numbers. The Rams and Barrie Colts goaltenders would be tested early and tested often as the offense on both ends of the ice were at full throttle looking for the tournament victory. With no penalties and only a handful of stoppages in the first period, time flew by as the horn sounded and the scoreboard revealed a 1-1 score. The Rams managed to get one past the keeper in the second and were up 2-1 but an early Colts goal in the third period had the game deadlocked at 2 per side. The refs allowed the teams to battle hard but it was the grinding Rams forwards that managed one more with only 3:10 left in the game. Despite tremendous efforts by the Colts team, including a 6th attacker, the Rams were able to keep them at bay and hold on to claim the 3-2 victory.

Congratulations to the Major Atom Rams players, coaching staff, and the 7th man in the stands. Way to go Rams and Rams families!
