Major Midget RAMS .. North York Champions

After writing High School exams all week the Major Midget  “B” RAMS travelled down to Toronto ready to take on U18 AA teams in the North York tournament.

They had a sluggish start and lost the first game 4-3 on Friday. Saturday brought 2 victories, 3-1 and 2-1, securing first place and a position in the finals against the North York Knights.

The final game on Sunday was hard fought, with a lot of back and forth action. Two goals late in the third and then an empty net goal in the last few minutes, clinched the championship 4-1.

Congratulations to the team for a tremendous effort! Great memories on and off the ice especially for the older Midget players, on their last minor hockey road trip!

The Stittsville Steel Make It Two For Two in Tournaments

The Stittsville Steel rolled into Pembroke on the weekend of Dec 19-20 looking to continue their winning ways in the PMHA Holiday classic. First up, a team from Kanata. This was no contest from the drop of the puck. With ferocious puck pursuit the Kanata team didn’t stand a chance. Led by a six point effort from Cameron (Snakebite) Cheslock the Steel easily rolled to an 8-1 victory.

Next up, the hometown Pembroke Rebels. The victory seemed assured with the Steel jumping out to a 7-1 lead halfway through the second period. Things got a little tense when Pembroke scored 3 quick goals to close the gap. With Matthew Roy taking charge with a career first hat trick, Guiseppe (Pep) Scarfo scoring one of the nicest goals from in close and Reid (Tiny) Dupuy firing a laser from the point that found the net just under the crossbar the Steel finished off the Rebels 9-4.

On to a much closer game against the Renfrew Fultons. Perhaps sluggish from the day before or swimming too much, it was not the strongest game the Steel have played this year. With tenacious defensive play from Owen (O-dog) Watt and a very poised and skilled two points from Alex (A-Rod) Rodgers the team prevailed 2-1. On to the semis!

Arnprior River Kings lie in wait for the Steel. A solid game all around at both ends highlighted by the playmaking abilities of Jacob (the Skroket rocket) Skrok, the sweet finish of Cameron (Blue) Barry and the poise and positioning of Coby (Socks) Guilbault. Final, 4-0 for the good guys.

On to the final against a motivated, skilled and strong Fort Colonge Comets. A very well played, entertaining game from the start saw the Steel go out in front with Jacob (Squeaky) Drouin scoring a dandy from his office in front of the net. FC tied it up 9 seconds later at the 4:30 mark of the third. Relentless fore-checking and digging by Sam (Sammy G) Gilbert, very strong defensive play and positioning from Mathieu (MPG) Gougeon and as always stellar goaltending from Sam (Chirp) Noseworthy kept the score tied into the final minute. Overtime loomed large and would have been a fitting outcome to a game like this. Jesse (Bubba) Miller would have none of it. Taking the puck on a great feed, Bubba neatly disposed of two defenders and ripped a rocket to the twine with 58 seconds left. Smelling victory, the Steel never let the Comets get a sniff of opportunity in the final minute. Game over-tournament champs.

A very compacted schedule saw the Steel play their first game Saturday at 1pm and their last Sunday at 5pm. 5 games in 28 hours, mixed in with some swimming, a lot of laughs and a pretty darn good party made for some very tired but jubilant families on Sunday evening.

Steel win Spencerville Tournament

Hardest working team!
The Stittsville Steel started their tournament season in fine fashion by winning the B championship of the South Grenville tournament Nov 28-30. The weekend started off with the biggest challenge the Steel would face so far this year-the Brockville Braves. An excellent hockey game from start to finish saw the Steel come up on the wrong side of a 5-3 score. All players worked hard, and if not for a few bad breaks, (goal from behind the net, off a helmet, empty netter)  the result could have been different. An awesome game to watch!

Next up was a team from St. Isadore. With relentless forechecking, a very good team could not compete and fell to the Steel 5-1. Nepean Nighthawks and Embrun Panthers were the next opponents. Despite these being the 4th and 5th games the players have had in less than 48hrs, the focus and execution was still there. Scores of 3-1 and 4-1 gave the Steel the opportunity to play for a championship.

A very determined and focused Nepean Fire awaited. The Steel got off to their first lead of the tournament and looked to be off easy when it was 2-0 at the end of the second period. Nepean would have none of that. Their relentless charge put a scare in all, especially when the score went to 2-1 with 430 left. The Steel regrouped, focused, and led by always stellar goaltending, came away with a well deserved victory and championship. Way to go Steel!

Stittsville Peewee B5 Titans Win the Arnprior  House B Tournament

The Titans’ weekend didn’t start off great with a loss to the West End Storm 3-1 in our first game of the tournament.  But a four game win streak started from there to allow us to take the trophy.  We started our streak with a win over the Host Arnprior Anacondas 9-1.  This then setup our final pool game versus Perth Lanark Wings, we won a close game 3-2 which allowed us to win the pool on goal differential.

Our semifinal game was against the Smiths Falls Bears and we were down 2-1 in the third period and we took a penalty with just over 3 minutes left.  But the boys didn’t give up and Matthew Gagnon was able to score the tying goal shorthanded with just over a minute left.    Then with only 23.5 seconds left Nico Pare scored the winning goal with a great end to end rush.  2 Goals in the last minute and a half to steal the berth in the finals!

That set us up for a match in the final against the undefeated Brockville Braves.  Brockville got off to a very fast start with 2 goals in the first period.   But our boys just played harder.   We scored the tying goal midway through the third period.  We then unfortunately took two penalties late in the third period, and we were able to kill off a 1 minute 5 on 3 with some timely saves from our Goalie Joey Bernier.  Off to 3 on 3 overtime we went.  A few minutes into the overtime period Matthew Gagnon made a great individual effort and deked out their defence and then the goalie for the Tournament Winning Goal!!!!!!!!!!

It was a great Team Effort for the Victory.
