Player Equipment Requirements
Here is a complete list of equipment required by all players (including first‑year Initiation players). Equipment must be worn at both practices and games. Equipment does not need to be new, but it must be in good condition and fit properly.
It is especially important that skates fit correctly and are sharpened regularly during the season. The frequency varies by player, but typically every 5–7 hours of ice time. Please check skates regularly for dullness.
Equipment List
- CSA‑approved helmet with wire face guard or full plastic shield (no visors). Original earpieces must be intact and no additional decals or stickers may be added.
- Mouth guard — optional but recommended.
- BNQ‑approved throat protector (bib‑style recommended). For goalies, a rigid plastic throat protector attached to the helmet.
- Shoulder pads.
- Hockey pants with Velcro sock attachments or suspenders.
- Elbow pads.
- Practice jersey (game jerseys provided by SMHA are not to be used for practices).
- Wrist guards — recommended but not mandatory.
- Hockey gloves.
- Hockey shorts with integrated protective cup.
- Hockey socks (one pair provided by SMHA; additional pairs available at local stores).
- Shin guards.
- Long underwear or comfortable base layer.
- Properly sized skates.
- Stick of appropriate length — when standing in skates with the stick upright, the end should reach nose height. First‑time players may prefer a straight blade until they determine shooting preference.
- Fabric tape for the stick — a taped knob prevents the hand from slipping off and should be large enough not to pass through the cage openings.
- A screwdriver and extra helmet screws.
- A hockey bag to carry equipment.
Note for U7/U9 parents: Canadian Tire sells starter hockey sets that include most required equipment in one bag.
